Sudanese Government must reverse decision to expel aid agencies from Darfur – Ó Snodaigh

5 March, 2009 - by Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD

Sinn Féin International Affairs Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD has called on the Government of Sudan to reverse its decision to expel ten aid agencies from Darfur.

Deputy Ó Snodaigh said if the Sudanese Government refuses to reverse its decision the UN must mobilise to ensure that the thousands of refugees dependent on these agencies receive the aid they require.

Deputy Ó Snodaigh said, "I would urge the Sudanese Government to reverse its decision to expel ten aid agencies from Darfur. These agencies are fundamental to the operation to deal with the humanitarian crisis in that region and are essential to the very survival of hundreds of thousands of refugees.

"If the Sudanese Government refuses to reverse this decision the UN must be prepared to mobilised to ensure that the hundreds of thousands of refugees dependent on these agencies receive the aid they require.

"International pressure must be focussed on the Sudanese Government to persuade them to reverse this decision." ENDS
