Ministerial announcements welcomed
Sinn Féin MLA’s Jennifer McCann (deputy Chair of the Enterprise Trand & Investment Committee) and Sue Ramsey (Chair of the Employment & Learning Committee) have both welcomed announcements made this morning by Reg Empey and Arlene Foster; but made the point clearly that outstanding questions remain unanswered.
Speaking from the Assembly this morning Ms McCann said,
“Arlene Foster’s announcement of a short term aid scheme, which will offer support to businesses that have found themselves in difficulties due to the economic downturn will no doubt be welcomed.
If Invest NI are to convene the selection panel for this aid then we would hope that the selection process would be as open and transparent as well as wide ranging in terms of assisting the development of indigenous business.
Given that the scheme will be introduced from next week we would hope that Invest NI would assess the need for support in a way that all applicants would be considered equally in terms of opportunity right across the north.”
Sue Ramsey added,
“During his statement Reg Empey mentioned that the ‘skill safe’ scheme is being developed in terms of public expenditure restraints.
We need to hear clearly from the Minister whether or not this will impact on the decision as to which companies are offered the schemes and how the decision will be made.”
