SDLP challenged to publish MPs expenses

28 May, 2009

Sinn Fein MP Conor Murphy has reacted angrily to the comments from SDLP Leader Mark Durkan about MPs expenses and challenged the Foyle MP to ‘put up or shut up’.

Mr Murphy said:

“If the SDLP have nothing to hide then why don’t they just get on with it and publish the expenses of their MPs.

“We know that Mark Durkan doesn’t approve of Alasdair McDonald using tax payers money to buy a property in London; we know that he is unclear about whether the good doctor is still working as a GP and we know that Mark Durkan spends taxpayers money on buying food for himself despite being paid over £60,000 a year.

“Sinn Fein are not in politics for self gain or profit. All our paid activists, including elected representatives earn aprox £24,000 a year. Is there any SDLP politician who would do the same?

“It is time for the SDLP to ‘put up or shut up’ - any other response only further undermines what little remaining credibility they have.” ENDS
