Sinn Féin MLA Jennifer McCann expresses dismay at Electoral Office polling station error in West Belfast

29 May, 2009 - by Jennifer McCann

West Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Jennifer McCann has expressed her dismay after it emerged that the Electoral Office has issued polling cards with the wrong polling station information to over 1,500 people in the Colin area of West Belfast.

Ms McCann said:

‘’I was contacted on Thursday evening, 28th May, by a number of constituents in the Poleglass area who told me that they had received polling cards telling them they would be voting in a different polling station.

‘’I went to the Electoral Office on Friday morning to raise this issue of concern.

‘’The Electoral Office admitted they had made a mistake and that the affected people had not had their polling station changed.

‘’This is a huge error for the Electoral Office to make with less than a week to go before Election Day.

‘’I am calling on the Electoral Office to immediately reissue polling cards to all the affected electors containing the correct information and to engage in an immediate pro-active publicity campaign to inform those affected by this grave error of where their polling station actually is.

‘’I am also calling on the Chief Electoral Officer to give a public apology for this debacle and to provide a full explanation of what went wrong to the 1,500 constituents of mine in West Belfast who have been affected by this.’’ ENDS
