Ferris Stresses Importance of Europe to Farmers
Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Agriculture Martin Ferris TD has this afternoon stressed the importance of Europe to farmers and the need for European representatives to maintain close contact with the rural community. Deputy Ferris was responding to what he has described as a petty attack by Micheal Martin on Dublin MEP Mary Lou MacDonald for having attended the Ploughing Championship last year. The Kerry TD noted that the Ministers own Ireland East MEP Liam Aylward also attended the ploughing championships last year.
Deputy Ferris said: “Mary Lou along with myself and other party representatives attend the ploughing championship’s each year as we believe that it is one of the most important events in the rural and farming calendar and one which provides an opportunity for the rural community to impress its concerns on those who represent them in Brussels. Mary Lou is elected from Dublin, which of course has in its suburbs a substantial rural and agricultural sector.
“Fianna Fáil continues to criminalise fishermen, has imposed cuts in funding and support for farmers, has withdrawn cancer services throughout rural Ireland and has heaped tax increases on low-paid workers. This is rural Ireland’s experience of Fianna Fáil in government and in the EU. It would be my advice to the Minister that he take a little time out from his Ministerial mercs and perks to actually rub shoulders with the communities throughout Ireland devastated by his government’s unjust economic decisions.” ENDS
