People in west Belfast not receiving polling cards

2 June, 2009 - by Jennifer McCann

Sinn Féin west Belfast MLA Jennifer McCann has slammed the failure of the Electoral Office to issue numerous people in west Belfast with polling day cards for this Thursdays election.

Ms McCann was commenting after a number of people had contacted her party’s Sevastopol Street Office concerned with not receiving their cards. Ms McCann has stressed that while important, polling cards are not essential in order to vote.

Speaking this afternoon she said,

“This is yet another example of the electoral office failing the people of west Belfast. I have no doubt that people on the ground will be angered by this deliberate attempt at further disenfranchisement.

I would stress to people that while important polling cards are not essential in order to vote. You can still exercise your right to vote without having a polling card as long as you are on the electoral register and have valid photographic ID.

My party will be forwarding the concerns of those many people who have been in contact with us today, as well as our own concerns, to the Electoral Commission and Office.” CRÍOCH
