Maskey condemns so called ‘punishment attack’

5 June, 2009 - by Alex Maskey

Sinn Féin Policing and Justice Spokesperson Alex Maskey MLA has condemned the shooting of a man in west Belfast last night.

Mr Maskey said that while he accepted that many people had been let down by the policing and criminal justice system here in the north, results would not be achieved through this activity.

Speaking this morning Mr Maskey said,

“This type of attack is wrong and I know the overwhelming majority of people will acknowledge that fact. However the reality is that many people have become so let down and disillusioned by the failures of the policing and criminal justice system here that they can become indifferent towards this activity.

The onus is on political and community leaders but in particular on the PSNI and the PPS to show that there is an alternative to these attacks and that we as a community can and will make them work.

I call on those responsible for these attacks to fall in behind the efforts of the community to create a truly safer and crime-free place.” CRÍOCH
