Social benefits increase will not benefit those in need

8 June, 2009 - by Mickey Brady

Commenting on the announcement of increases in some Social Security benefits today Sinn Fein MLA Micky Brady MLA (Newry/Armagh) said:

“Unfortunately people on Social Security Benefits will today, have little to celebrate in real terms with regard to the minimal increase announced, which neither takes into account the rise in inflation generally or the higher cost of living in the North compared to elsewhere else.

“The poverty-trap, in which many people on Social Security Benefits find themselves, needs to be realistically reassessed in line with the economic conditions that exist in the North. Food, clothes, energy and other living costs are proportionately higher here, thus negating any marginal benefits increase.

“Sinn Fein has called for a realistic approach to be taken to this detrimental anomaly which continues to adversely affect people on Social Security Benefits in the North and we will continue to raise the unequal and unfair way in which it affects the most vulnerable”
