Deplorable lack of progress on suicide prevention must be addressed – Ó Caoláin

10 June, 2009 - by Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD

Sinn Féin Health spokesperson Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD has described as “deplorable” the lack of progress made by the Government on a range of measures proposed three years ago to address the high level of suicide in Irish society.

Commenting on the progress report published today by the Oireachtas Health & Children Committee, Deputy Ó Caoláin said:

“The high level of suicide in Irish society is a cause of grief and tragedy to thousands of families and an issue that needs to be addressed in a serious and concerted manner by the Government and all relevant State agencies.

“The 2006 Oireachtas sub-committee report entitled ‘The High Level of Suicide in Irish Society’ was a landmark document. It proposed 33 measures but today’s report shows that on all but six of the proposals no significant progress or very limited progress has been made.

“It is deplorable that so little has been done over the past three years by the Minister for Health & Children and her colleagues. The Government must wake up to reality and act urgently to address the tragedy of suicide in our society.” ENDS
