Successive reports show radical overhaul of Prison Service is required.
Sinn Fein MLA and spokesperson on Human Rights Martina Anderson has stated that the publication of several reports in to the Prison Service highlights the need for a radical overhaul of how prisons are run and staff operate.
Speaking today Ms Anderson said:
“The report published by the Criminal Justice Inspector Michael Maguire today is the third report this year that highlights serious shortfalls in any sort of adequate service provision or compliance with human rights norms within our prison service.
“Previously this year the Prison Ombudsman made 44 recommendations in a report following the death of Colin Bell and only this week we saw an appointed review team make further recommendations into Maghaberry Prison stating that the Prison Service requires "significant cultural change".
“In all these findings clearly highlight the need for a radical overhaul of the Prison Service. Currently this is the gift of Paul Goggins and there is an onus on him to begin such an overhaul immediately given the seriousness of the situation and the findings of successive reports.”
