Maskey comments on end of PSNI Full Time Reserve

15 June, 2009 - by Alex Maskey

Sinn Féin Policing Board member Alex Maskey today said that the ending of the Full Time Reserve was another necessary step on the road to building an accountable civic policing service.

Mr Maskey said:

“The removal of the full time reserve from the policing equation is another necessary step on the journey to an accountable and civic policing service. Of course we will see a rear guard action being mounted by the Police Federation and some politicians who hark back to the past. But the reality remains that the implementation of Patten in its entirety, including the removal of the full time reserve, is the route map laid down to bring us from the policing failures of the past into a new policing era.

“The Chief Constable has briefed the Policing Board on this matter. He has made it clear that he sees this move as an important further step and that it will in no way impact on the PSNI job of delivering frontline services for local communities.

“So my message would be to those opponents of change within the PSNI, to stop fighting battles that are lost and concentrate on their job which is about building confidence within the community in the new policing structures.” ENDS
