Belfast City Council Incinerator vote puts the focus back on Recycling – Cllr Maskey

22 June, 2009

Sinn Féin Councillor for Oldpark Conor Maskey has tonight said that he is pleased Belfast City Council supported the Sinn Féin proposal for a Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) facility on the site of the north foreshore and opposed the proposal for an Incinerator plant.

Speaking following the meeting this evening Cllr Maskey said;

“The Sinn Féin proposal at tonight’s Council meeting outlined our preference to see an MBT facility located on the north foreshore as opposed to an incineration plant; the motion was adopted on a cross party basis.

“We believe that tonight’s decision gives the city an important opportunity to show leadership in relation to waste management with the introduction of an MBT facility.

“Tonight’s vote puts the focus back where it rightly belongs – on the issue of Reduce, Re-use and Recycle. MBT assists this policy.

“Tonight’s decision effectively gives us the ability to protect the ratepayers of Belfast from both, potential environmental costs as well as financial costs by way of fines in the future from European Union.”
