Israeli sanction of illegal settlements highly provocative – Ó Snodaigh

23 June, 2009 - by Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD

Sinn Féin spokesperson on International Affairs, Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD, has described reports that Israel has authorised more illegal settlements on Palestinian land as “highly provocative” and requiring urgent sanction.

Deputy Ó Snodaigh said, “News emanating from Israel today suggests that the Government there has given the go ahead for further illegal settlements on Palestinian land.

“Coming as it does so close to recent comments from the US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, who objected strongly to such settlements, it shows a depth of arrogance that is beyond belief.

“Israel is a rogue state. It needs to be sanctioned for its blatant violations of international law and human rights. It is very clear that the softly, softly approach adopted by both the European Union and the US to Israel just doesn’t work and is morally wrong.

“Sinn Féin is once again calling on the Irish Government, at the very minimum, to go to the European Union and demand that all special trade and other agreements with Israel are suspended until they start behaving like a civilized country. Israel’s highly provocative actions and their brutality of the Palestinian people needs to be met with a robust response from the International community.” ENDS
