Support for north Belfast Housing protest at Stormont

30 June, 2009 - by Carál Ní Chuilín

Sinn Féin north Belfast MLA and member of the Social Development Committee Carál Ní Chuilín has expressed her support for the protest taking place today, organised by the ‘Upper Long Streets Residents Association’.

The Association will submit a petition calling for redevelopment within the area.

Speaking from Stormont this morning Ms Ní Chuilín said;

“This is a massive issue for the residents of the Upper Long Streets in the New Lodge; they are calling for redevelopment within their area to help bring the standard of their homes up to scratch within the twenty first century.

I support their protest highlighting their difficulties this afternoon and think it is unfortunate that the Minister, Margaret Ritchie, will not accept the petition in person, rather send a senior civil servant instead.

The important campaign for redevelopment will continue and I commend the campaigners for their determination and resilience. I would hope that the Minister will take head of their genuine plea and act on the demands submitted within their petition.” CRÍOCH
