Empey playing politics with the Institutions

7 July, 2009 - by John O'Dowd

Sinn Féin Assembly member John O’Dowd has accused the UUP leader Reg Empey of playing politics with the political institutions as he seeks to cosy up to Jim Allister and the TUV.

Mr O’Dowd said:

“In recent weeks we have endured from Reg Empey an almost constant criticism of the Executive of which he seems to forget he is a member. People will find it hard to believe that this is anything other than politicking when the fact is neither he nor his fellow UUP Minister are in fact fulfilling their Ministerial duties properly.

“For sometime now in a bid for electoral advantage, Reg Empey, who claims to support the political institutions, has been cosying up to Jim Allister and the TUV. Part of this strategy seems to be a decision by the UUP to boycott plenary meetings of the North South Ministerial Council. Neither UUP Minister has attended the last two meetings.

“People might think that Reg Empey and the UUP would have learned the lessons of the past when it comes to an abdication of political leadership and a decision to lurch towards those who want to see an end to the political institutions and a return to the failed politics of the past.” ENDS
