Ferris calls for assurance on Turf Cutting
The Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Agriculture Martin Ferris TD has called on the Minister for the Environment to provide assurances that farmers with traditional turf cutting rights will not be prevented from continuing to do so on the basis of EU legislation being made Irish law. He also called for those who have agreed to stop cutting turf to be paid the compensation promised.
Deputy Ferris said: “While I recognise that there are environmental issues at stake, I do not see the point in putting an end to a traditional practise that provides a small but essential part of the income and survival of many small and medium farmers, especially in the western counties. I would therefore call on Minister Gormley to provide assurances on this, and to ensure that the compensation agreement is honoured immediately.” ENDS
