Closure of Armagh hospital 'devastating blow'

10 July, 2009 - by Cathal Boylan

Sinn Féin MP for Newry/Armagh, Conor Murphy has said that the decision by Health Minister Michael McGimpsey to support the Southern Health Trust’s proposal to close Mullinure hospital within four to six months is a ‘devastating blow for Armagh’.

Mr. Murphy said,

“Mullinure hospital provides vital services for the people of this area as well as supplying many in the community with much needed employment. This is a devastating blow for Armagh and I am extremely disappointed to hear of its proposed closure.

“Public-sector jobs account for between 35% and 40% of the total job provision in Armagh, and the health sector provides 18% of those jobs. One can see how important those jobs are to the local economy.

His party colleague Cathal Boylan MLA said,

“For some time the people of Armagh have rallied together and demanded that Mullinure hospital remain open. The Minister has ignored the will of the people in Armagh and the people of this area will bear the consequences of his decision.
