Ó Snodaigh welcomes reversal of decision to close Cherry Orchard Alzheimer’s Unit

14 July, 2009 - by Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD

Dublin South Central Sinn Féin TD Aengus Ó Snodaigh has welcomed the announcement that the decision to close the Alzheimer’s Unit and Cherry Orchard Hospital has been reversed. Speaking today Deputy Ó Snodaigh described the news as a victory for the local community and the patients and families involved.

He said, “I very much welcome the news that the Beach Unit at Cherry Orchard Hospital will not close. This is a major victory for the community, the patients and the families involved. The HSE has seen sense and reversed the closure of the Alzheimer’s Unit at Cherry Orchard Hospital.

“Since the cuts were announced it has caused major distress and anxiety to the families and patients who were to be moved to other units or to private nursing homes. Today’s news means that everyone who currently has a bed at the unit will not now be deprived of that bed.

“I regret that the management are still intent on cutting or delaying services elsewhere in the Hospital to make up the shortfall in funding from the HSE and Minister for Health.

“I appeal to families and the community to remain vigilant of other HSE cuts to local services and congratulate all those involved in the recent protests on an important victory for the community.” ENDS
