De Brún expresses concern at new Lithuanian "anti-gay" law

15 July, 2009 - by Martina Anderson MEP

Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún has expressed concern at a new anti gay law set to come into force in Lithuania in 2010 which is the same as Margaret Thatcher's Section 28 which even the current Tory leader David Cameron has disowned.

The law called 'The Protection of Minors against the Detrimental Effect of Public Information' bans 'propaganda of homosexuality and bisexuality ...from schools and any other places where it can be accessed by young people.'

De Brún is backing a call from the European Parliament's Intergroup on LGBT rights for the Parliament President Jerzy Buzek to write to the Lithuanian authorities registering the concern of MEPs.

De Brún said

"This law is reminiscent of Mrs Thatcher's Section 28 which even the current Tory leader David Cameron has disowned.

It has no place in twenty-first century Europe. I am glad to see MEPs raising it in the parliament and hope our actions can will make the Lithuanian government reconsider their proposals.” CRÍOCH
