Moves on sheep-tagging "'important": de Brún
Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún has said the moves to allow greater flexibility in how sheep are electronically tagged "is very important and will come as a relief to sheep farmers".
Speaking from the European Parliament in Strasbourg Ms de Brún said:
"These moves will significantly lift the financial burden of many sheep farmers, saving them the cost of scanners for their farms while at the same time the new rules mean that the authorities will still be aware of animal movements. While this does not resolve all the issues, it is very important and will come as a relief to sheep farmers".
The EU has now said that farmers may now tag their sheep just before they leave the farm and that third-parties such as markets and slaughterhouses may now read the tags instead. This will mean far less cost to the farmer compared to the previous Commission proposal.
