‘They need to justify their actions to the people of Ardoyne’ Kelly

16 July, 2009 - by Gerry Kelly

Sinn Féin north Belfast MLA Gerry Kelly has this afternoon, again called on the spokespeople from various so-called dissident organisation, to come forward and explain the rationale for a third night of violence in Ardoyne.

Speaking at a press conference in Ardoyne today Mr Kelly said;

“This morning I was informed by the PSNI of a threat made against me; as a Sinn Féin and Republican activist I have received many threats over a long number of years. While I take this threat seriously be certain that it will not detract me from my political work or from representing the people of north Belfast. This threat comes on the back of numerous threats and attacks on my party colleagues, Martin McGuinness, Conor Murphy, Mitchell McLaughlin and Daithí McKay.

As well as this in the early hours of yesterday morning the home of a Sinn Féin activist, who is a well known community worker, was attacked with a petrol bomb. This is not the first time this man’s home has been attacked.

I am once again calling on spokespeople for the various ‘dissident’ organisations to explain the rationale for leaving a loaded weapon in the middle of Ardoyne, which was found by children and worse again for firing shots and using pipe bombs in the midst of a riot situation, which is uncontrolled and where you have many children in the vicinity.

These various groupings must explain to the community, without any further delay, why they entered in to Ardoyne on Monday, four hours before the residents protest began. It is up to them to explain to the community why, for the third successive night, they have actively encouraged young people, many of them children, to bring havoc and untold disruption and trauma onto the community of Ardoyne.

Once again, we await their respective responses.” CRÍOCH
