Proposed Social Welfare and Community Employment cuts will devastate many communities – Ó Snodaigh

16 July, 2009 - by Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD

Dublin Sinn Féin TD Aengus Ó Snodaigh has accused the Government of getting An Bord Snip Nua to do its dirty work. Deputy Ó Snodaigh described the proposed welfare cuts, the cuts to Community Employment schemes and destruction of RAPID programmes across the city as a “serious assault on working class communities”.

Deputy Ó Snodaigh said, “It is clear that this report was produced by people who are ideology in league with the right-wing Fianna Fáil/Green Party government. They have produced a report that is nothing more than a cloak of convenience for the Government to bring about the cuts they already had in mind.

“In working class communities across Dublin these cuts, if implemented, will have a devastating impact. Savage cuts to welfare, to Community Employment schemes and the destruction of RAPID programmes in particular will set communities back many years and will consign many communities and individuals to further years of hardship and depression.

“Large parts of this city and indeed the state did not benefit in a real way from the Celtic Tiger boom – instead what they got was crumbs from the table as the greedy bankers, financers and developers hogged the lot. Now the Government, with An Bord Snip Nua doing its dirty work, would have the crumbs taken away. It’s a disgrace and must be resisted.

“We all know savings must be made and money must be raised. You don’t do that by targeting those with the least. You start at the top and work your way down – not the other way around. At the same time you need to totally reform your taxation system to make it more equitable.” ENDS
