Minister Ritchie must deliver on promises to the Market community
South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has called upon Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie to deliver on her promises to the Market community.
Alex’s comments came after the Social Development Minister’s Department received a further £20 million of funding from the Assembly Executive to fund social housing, repairs and other schemes. However, despite this additional funding being made available, Minister Margaret Ritchie is still blocking the implementation of the Environmental Improvement Scheme in the Market area, a scheme which would see improvement work carried out in the community, a scheme she had previously committed her Department to carrying out.
Alex Maskey said,
“This scheme has been promised for this area for the past number of years but as yet not been delivered. Phases 3 and 4 should have been completed some considerable time ago but the Minister’s Department has so far refused to provide the necessary funding.
“Recent weeks saw the Department of Social Development receive a further £20ml from the Assembly Executive. The fact that the Margaret Ritchie is refusing to spend any of this additional money on the Market Improvement Scheme while at the same time having approved millions of pounds of funding for other projects in recent months is indicative of the contempt that the Minister continues to show for this community.
"Sinn Féín is committed to delivering for the people in this area. Along with local community representatives we will continue to pursue this issue on behalf of residents."
