Fears of more home care privatisation

14 August, 2009

Fears are growing that more of the home care service in the Causeway area will be privatised as a result of the Comprehensive Spending Review being carried out by the Northern Trust.

Sinn Féin’s Coleraine Councillor Billy Leonard has said that he is not convinced that the move would be a positive one.

He said:

“I think there needs to be more clarity on these issues as many believe home care jobs are not safe if increased privatisation proceeds and the standard of care will not necessarily increase.

“I raised this with the former Trust Chief Executive, Norma Evans, when she gave a general briefing to Coleraine Council some months ago and now I know that staff and Trade Union representatives are very concerned the public have not got the correct information.

“I have recently been in touch with Unison and advised them to arrange a briefing for Coleraine Council so that the issues and concerns can be aired.

“With an aging population and a policy for more care in the home to relieve spaces in the hospitals, it is vital that we get this one right.” ENDS
