£3.5 million Boost for Fishing Ports now open for applications - Gildernew

Sinn Féin Fisheries Minister Michelle Gildernew MP, MLA has confirmed the opening of the Ports, Landing Sites and Shelter’s Measure of the European Fisheries Fund.

The Measure will provide £3.5million to port authorities that serve the local fishing industry over the next five years and will open for applications on Thursday 20 August.

Making the announcement, the Minister said:

“The news that the Ports, Landing Sites and Shelters Measure of the £30million European Fisheries Fund will open for applications this Thursday will be of great interest particularly in the current difficult economic climate. Over the next five years, this measure will provide port authorities with £3.5million support to implement capital projects that benefit our local fishing industry and my officials will be happy to discuss proposals with any prospective applicant.”

The European Fisheries Fund (EFF) Programme will provide the NI fishing industry with €36.2million of grant assistance until it closes on 31 December 2015. The European Commission is providing €18.1million of support with the remaining €18.1million being provided by Executive funds.

EFF support is provided under 4 Priority Axis, namely:-

Priority Axis 1 Measures for the adaptation of the Community Fishing Fleet.
Priority Axis 2 Aquaculture, Inland Fishing, Processing and Marketing of Fishery and Aquaculture Products.
Priority Axis 3 Measures of Common Interest.
Priority Axis 4 Sustainable Development of Fisheries Areas. 

Council Regulation (EC) No 1198/2006 of 27 July 2006 on the European Fisheries Fund provides further information on what proposals are eligible for support under the Programme.

Ports, Landing Sites and Shelters falls within Priority Axis 3 (Measures of Common Interest) of the European Fisheries Fund.

Further Measures will open as Measure level business cases are completed, with the aim of having all Measures open by 30 June 2010.
