Europe Matters – Read the Treaty – Doherty
Speaking today Sinn Féin Senator Pearse Doherty has urged voters to “read the Lisbon Treaty and make up their own minds before voting on October 2nd.”
Senator Doherty said:
“Recent opinion polls indicate that a large percentage of voters have yet to make up their minds on the Lisbon Treaty. With five weeks left to polling day there is a responsibility on all of us, on both sides of the debate, to promote a better understanding of the text of the Treaty and its implications for Ireland and Europe.
“In the coming days voters will be presented with a wide range of views on the Lisbon Treaty. Sinn Féin will make a clear and fact based case against the Treaty, arguing that it undermines democracy, weakens Ireland’s strength at the heart of Europe, undermines workers rights, damages public services and promotes free trade over fair trade.
“But don’t believe us, read the Treaty and make up your own mind. While much of its text is incomprehensible, there are many sections that are easily understood and would make troubled reading for many voters.
“Articles 10 and 28 outline the future of the EU’s emerging common foreign and defence policies. Article 188C outlines the EU’s approach to international trade. The Protocol on the Internal Market and Competition outlines the EU’s approach to ending ‘distortions’ in the internal market.
“Throughout the campaign Sinn Féin intends to shine a light on the text of the Treaty, to explain its meaning and its implications for Ireland and the EU.
“We are urging voters to read the Lisbon Treaty and make up their own minds before voting on October 2nd.” ENDS
