Recommendations of 'No Home from Home' report are welcomed

1 September, 2009 - by Jennifer McCann

Sinn Féin MLA Jennifer McCann has welcomed the recommendations set out in the "No Home from Home" report released by the Human Rights Committee.

Speaking earlier Ms McCann said:

"Today’s report highlights the issue of how people who have no access to public funds and services due to their immigration status results in many families becoming destitute.

“There is a clear need for an emergency fund to be set up by the Executive to ensure the housing, health and educational needs of all people are met.

“Sinn Féin has already made representations to the Departments of Health, the Department of Education and the Office of First and Deputy First Minister to ask the Executive to bring forward an emergency fund that will provide access to health and educational needs for children and families who are in need of critical support.

“We've have seen many voluntary and community based organisations having to provide essential services, which are the responsibility of government departments, out of their own funding.

“I am once again calling on the Executive to set up an emergency fund to help people who have come to live in Ireland and through a bad turn of circumstance face being homeless, take sick or are left vulnerable and who cannot access those services through normal channels due to their immigration status."
