Urgent EU Action needed on Biodiversity

1 September, 2009 - by Martina Anderson MEP

Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún has questioned the Swedish EU Presidency about their concrete proposals on biodiversity and for the protection of ecosystems.

Ms de Brún questioned Swedish Environment Minister Andreas Carlgen when he appeared before the European Parliament Environment Committee today.

Speaking at the European Parliament, Ms de Brún said:

"I welcome the forthcoming high level meeting in Stromstad and in particular the proposal for an international platform for exchanging know-how. However, I would like to know what concrete plans the Swedish EU Presidency has to go beyond this, given the disappointing lack of progress in implementing the Biodiversity Action Plan?

"What are the concrete proposals of the EU Presidency to promote implementation of the Biodiversity Action Plan and also to work on developing ecosystems and not just halting biodiversity loss?” ENDS
