Gildernew welcomes reinstatement of Erne Hospital services

9 September, 2009 - by Westminster

Fermanagh and South Tyrone MP Michelle Gildernew has welcomed the news that gynae services in the Erne Hospital in Enniskillen will be fully operational by next week. Ms Gildernew added that she will be meeting the Western Trust this week to assess how the crisis happened and examining measures to ensure that the Trust is not faced with such problems in the future.

Speaking on this matter Ms Gildernew said

“This is an issue that I have been personally involved in trying to resolve over the past six to eight weeks and I welcome this resolution.

“The entire ridiculous situation, caused by the British Home Office, came about when junior doctors could not avail of visas in order to allow them to work. This led to the closure of vital services for local people. What makes it all the more ridiculous is that one of the doctors trained here in Ireland and the other over in England.

“I have been in direct contact with British Immigration Minister Phil Woolis’ Private Office in relation to getting this matter resolved and we can now see the outworking of this.

“The fact that these much needed services were removed for this period is a failing that has let local people down and we must ensure that this does not happen again.  Visa’s for people offering such necessary services should be processed without the needless delays so often presented as a result of bureaucracy and red tape within the British Home Office.

“I welcome the resumption of full services by next week and I will be meeting with the Western Trust this week to examine ways in which we can endeavour to ensure that we are not left in such a position again.” CRIOCH
