Major concern with Loughinisland report finding – Ruane
Sinn Féin south Down MLA Cáitríona Ruane has expressed serious concerns with findings contained in a report by the Ombudsman into events surround the Loughinisland massacre.
Speaking this evening Ms Ruane said;
“I have been working with the families of those murdered at Loughinisland for some considerable time now; understandably they are seeking justice for their loved ones.
I, much like the families themselves, am deeply concerned with the speculation in the media this evening that suggests the report’s findings are damming of the police investigation and in particular around the widespread belief that there was collusion in relation to a cover up between the RUC and Loyalists following the murders.
A number of very serious questions remain unanswered and most worryingly it appears they would have remained unanswered unless the families had put the necessary pressure for a full investigation into the atrocity.
I have no doubt he families will regret and be deeply frustrated at the further delay announced in publication by the Police Ombudsman; when I and the families last met with the Ombudsman I stressed with him the great importance in publishing this report without any undue or unnecessary delay. The families will no doubt remain resolute however and eagerly await the conclusions of the report and will reserve comment on their strategy for future legal action pending this crucial report of major public interest.” CRÍOCH
