Adams in Dublin as Sinn Féin steps up campaign against Lisbon

11 September, 2009 - by Pat Sheehan, Westminster

Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams MP MLA will join party colleagues in Dublin City Centre on Sunday, 13th September to canvas for a ‘No’ vote in the Lisbon Treaty referendum.

As the campaign enters its final three weeks the Sinn Féin President said the party would be stepping up its campaign across the state and would be challenging at every step the bogus arguments being put forward by those advocating a ‘Yes’ vote.

Gerry Adams said today:

“Three weeks from today people will go to the polls to give their verdict on the Lisbon Treaty for the second time. People are now starting to make their up minds.

“Voters must decide whether they can trust government ministers who are simultaneously trying to sell them the Lisbon Treaty, the NAMA legislation which bails out irresponsible bankers with taxpayers’ money and who are seeking to implement range of cuts to essential public services.

“They must decide whether they believe those who told them that a better deal than the Lisbon Treaty wasn’t possible when they now tell them that a better deal has been achieved.

“Many people are seeing for themselves that this is the exact same Treaty which they gave their verdict on just over a year ago – that it has the same implications for workers’ rights, for the future of Irish farming and for neutrality.

“Sinn Féin is stepping up its campaign against the Lisbon Treaty which continues to represent a bad deal for Ireland. Our activists will get to as many doors as possible over the next three weeks. We will be explaining to people why the Lisbon Treaty needs to be rejected. We will be challenging the bogus arguments being put forward by the government parties, aided and abetted by Fine Gael and Labour. We will also be publishing our alternative guide to the Lisbon Treaty.

“We will ensure that people are informed when they make their decision and that they are not influenced by blatant scaremongering by some of those on the ‘Yes’ side.” ENDS

Note to Editors: Gerry Adams and members of Sinn Féin will be at the Spire on Dublin’s O’ Connell Street at 12 mid-day on Sunday, 13th September for a walkabout of the city centre.
