NIE need to introduce social tariff to aid the most vulnerable in society

15 September, 2009 - by Jennifer McCann

West Belfast MLA Jennifer McCann has called on NIE to introduce a social tariff system in the North. The call comes following the 5% reduction in electricity prices.

Speaking today Ms McCann said:

“The recent decrease of 5% in electricity prices gives little comfort for those in society who are living in fuel poverty.  People in the North of Ireland already pay more than people in the South and in Britain for electricity.

“The elderly, low income families, and those with disabilities already face great difficulties in paying for essentials such as heat and light.”

“NIE, like all of the large companies responsible for energy, are making huge profits from consumers here and they have a corporate responsibility to ensure that those people who are most disadvantaged or in need are not going to go cold or have to sit in darkness this winter because they are unable to pay their electricity bills.

“I am calling for a social tariff system to be introduced here to help those who are most vulnerable to fuel poverty. Dropping of the rate for this group will not massively impact upon NIE’s profit margin but will be felt by those who are finding it hard to make ends meet."
