de Brún welcomes greater Executive engagement with the EU

21 September, 2009 - by Martina Anderson MEP

Sinn Fein MEP Bairbre de Brún has said that it is essential that the Executive continues to develop and deepen its working relationship with the EU.

She was speaking as Junior Minister Gerry Kelly began a 2 day visit to Brussels.

Gerry Kelly will provide an update report regarding ongoing work on the Barroso Taskforce and meet with Regional Development Commissioner Pawel Samecki to discuss progress on the taskforce goals of maximising engagement with Europe and ensuring the North takes full advantage of European funding.

Also expected to be discussed is the ongoing development of proposals for a Peace Building and Conflict Resolution Centre.

Ms de Brún said:

“It is essential that the Executive continues to develop and deepen its working relationship with the EU.

“The EU has played a key role in supporting the transition from conflict to peace in the north of Ireland. The commitment to a Peace Building and Conflict Resolution Centre is further evidence of this continuing support.

“There are key areas of investment in our future that can be underpinned by a partnership with the EU; not just in areas such as conflict resolution, but also in vital areas such as agriculture and our rural communities, transport and renewable energy and energy efficiency.” ENDS
