Kenny comments a disgrace – Adams

25 September, 2009 - by Pat Sheehan, Westminster

Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams has hit out at the refusal of Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny to rule out a third referendum on the Lisbon Treaty, describing them as disgraceful.

Gerry Adams said:

“When questioned by Sinn Féin’s Senator Pearse Doherty at the Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Affairs yesterday, Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny refused to give a commitment that he will listen to the will of the people if they reject the Lisbon Treaty again. He refuses to rule out a third referendum on the Lisbon Treaty. His comments are disgraceful. This tells us much about Enda Kenny and the kind of government people could expect from a Fine Gael-led coalition.

“It is incredible that a man who aspires to be Taoiseach would refuse to give a commitment to listen to the will of the people. Most voters, even those intending to vote in favour of the Treaty, will be appalled at the idea that another ‘No’ vote would be met with a further referendum on the exact same treaty if Enda Kenny becomes Taoiseach.” ENDS
