Planning u-turn victory for Ringsend community – Sinn Féin

30 September, 2009

Coleraine Sinn Féin councillor Billy Leonard has received confirmation from Minister of the Environment Edwin Poots that a full planning application to increase the volume and types of waste that can be accepted at a waste management site at Ringsend outside Coleraine is required.

The Department was previously of a mind to allow the increase through as a ‘minor amendment’.

The community of Ringsend are facing the prospect of four waste management sites all within a few miles of the village and each other.

Leonard said:

“This is a small victory for the beleaguered community around Ringsend as a full application will lead to full consultation. So now the people can get the detail of the scheme and make their views known.

Given all they face, this is the least that should be done and it was amazing that the Department had to perform an embarrassing u-turn. The Department of Environment has once again shown that the community is its last consideration and will only react to pressure.

Obviously there are many other issues to contend with but at least on this occasion there has been some movement.” ENDS
