No excuse for Ceann Comhairle expenses

4 October, 2009

Sinn Féin Finance Spokesperson Arthur Morgan said there is no excuse that can be made following ongoing revelations around the expenses of John O'Donohue.  Morgan questioned how many rural bus routes would be cut to make up for the money that has been wasted on unnecessary travel by O’Donohue and his wife during his time as Minister for Arts, Sports and Toursim and his time as Ceann Comhairle.

Morgan said:

"People are hurting in this country. Hundreds of thousands have lost their jobs and many are struggling with basic necessities such as food and shelter. More and more people are falling into poverty. There is absolutely no excuse for the extravagance that was enjoyed by John O'Donohue and his family at the taxpayers' expense.

“Isolated pensioners faced with the abolition of the Rural Transport Scheme on which they are dependent are disgusted when they see public money being used on unnecessary chauffeur-driven transfers and other needless travel.  How many rural bus routes will be cut to make up for money that has been wasted on travel by O’Donohue and his wife during his time as Minister for Arts, Sports and Tourism and his time as Ceann Comhairle?

"The fact is every cent that this man has blown should be repaid to the exchequer. No elected representative can continue in their role when they have been shown to have behaved in this manner.” ENDS
