Custody death needs full investigation

5 October, 2009 - by Westminster

Sinn Féin West Tyrone MP Pat Doherty has extended his condolences to the family of a local man who died while in custody at the PSNI Strand Road Barracks in Derry yesterday. He also called for a full and speedy investigation by the Police Ombudsman.

The Police Ombudsman has been notified following the death of John Brady and there will now be an investigation into the circumstances.

Mr Doherty said:

“This is a tragic loss for the family. I want extend my deepest sympathies to them.

“There are obviously serious issues of concern about how John Brady died during daylight hours while in police custody.

“While the full details surrounding this death are unclear it is vital that there is a full and open investigation by the Police Ombudsman.” ENDS
