2 October, 2009 - by Westminster

Sinn Féin MP for Newry/Armagh Conor Murphy has welcomed news that Newry is to be connected to high speed information network, Project Kelvin.

Mr Murphy had lobbied for Newry to be connected to Project Kelvin for the last number of months and has met with the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Investment and Hibernian, the company tasked with implementing the project, in order to raise the issue.

Welcoming the news Mr. Murphy said,

"This is indeed a welcome announcement. Although we had always believed that Newry's connection to the line was possible it is great news to hear that is has finally been confirmed."

Mr. Murphy also commended the work of other groups who also lobbied for Newry's connection:

"The chamber of commerce must be commended for the work they have done on this issues over the last number of months. While some politicians attempted to cause distractions and say that it could not be done, they persevered and the people of this area will benefit from that." ENDS
