Anderson accuses Foster of defending the indefensible

5 October, 2009 - by Maeve McLaughlin

Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster is guilty of ‘defending the indefensible’ failings of Invest NI, Sinn Féin MLA Martina Anderson has said.

The Foyle Assembly member was speaking after the Minister launched a consultation on the recent Independent Review of Economic Policy report which was highly critical of Invest NI.
Martina Anderson said:

“This report was as a damning indictment of Invest NI's lack of strategic vision.

“It confirmed many of the criticisms that I have been making of Invest NI's failure to deliver for a very long time – particularly in areas like Derry.

“Unfortunately, rather than taking the criticism on board and launching a total reorganisation of Invest NI, the Minister has instead launched a public consultation on the independent report.

“When I challenged her on Invest NI’s failure of the North West region in particular, she told me to remember what the agency has done for our city!

“Well I do remember and so does the business community in Derry because what Invest NI has done for our city is nothing short of scandalous. Their record of skewing investment away from Derry and ignoring local SME’s is not something which any of us will easily forget.

“Rather than defending the indefensible, the Minister would be much better off launching a consultation into Invest NI rather than the report which her Department commissioned in the first place.
“I have no doubt that such a consultation would elicit a few unforgettable responses from the people of Derry.” CRÍOCH
