Ferris voices support for Aer Lingus workers

7 October, 2009 - by Martin Ferris TD

The Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Workers’ Rights Martin Ferris has voiced his support for Aer Lingus workers in the face of large scale threatened redundancies. The company has announced that it plans to cut 676 jobs covering all aspects of its operations. The move has been opposed by IMPACT.

Deputy Ferris said: “The threat by Aer Lingus is yet another example of the panicked and negative thinking on the part of many employers at the present time.

“The massive scaling down of Aer Lingus’ operations that the proposed redundancies will entail will severely limit the company’s capacity to properly service demand in the future once the economy begins to improve.

“Aer Lingus should be playing a vital role in the state’s tourism industry and the Government should bear this in mind with regard to the state’s share in Aer Lingus.

“I fully support the workers involved and the demand by their trade union representatives that the threat to their jobs is lifted.” ENDS
