Warning on travel 60+ Smart Pass usage outside of North

7 October, 2009 - by Maeve McLaughlin

Sinn Féin Foyle MLA Martina Anderson has warned those entitled to free travel on public transport for the over 60s that the scheme does not extend to England, Scotland and Wales or the 26 counties.

Her warning comes after being contacted by a constituent who encountered problems whilst visiting England when several public transport companies would not accept her 60+ Smart Pass

Martina Anderson said

“I was contacted by a constituent who has just returned from a visit to England and she told me of the problems they had encountered there when trying to use public transport .She was unaware that the 60+ Smart Pass scheme did not extend to England, Scotland and Wales and was left very upset when this led to difficulties when trying to use the transport systems there.

“She asked me to warn other users of the scheme who may be making travel arrangements for short breaks to visit families or friends in the run up to Christmas that this scheme is only available to anyone over 60 in the North and over 65 on an all Ireland basis.

Martina Anderson concluded by saying:

“Since the scheme was introduced here it has been of a significant benefit to people - saving them money, encouraging more people on to public transport and increasing their opportunities in a variety of ways but it must be emphasised that the 60+ Smart Pass is only valid in the North while 65+ can be used in other areas.

“It demonstrates once again how a locally-elected and locally-accountable assembly can improve the lives of local people and deliver on such issues.”
