Coleraine needs ‘special effort’ from all – Sinn Féin
Sinn Féin councillor Billy Leonard has said that all sectors of society in and around Coleraine need to make a special effort to move the district ahead in a positive manner.
Leonard’s comments come as tensions in the town remain high after numerous incidents and local police warning of a crackdown on violent behaviour in the town.
“The ongoing tensions between communities around various sites in Coleraine and the publicity over the trouble Sunday week ago mean that many people are very concerned.
I believe that special efforts must be made by all sectors of our community and old positions such as not talking to Sinn Féin representatives and activists must be shelved. That position has passed its use by date.
We have had meetings at Council level, community level and then with the Office of the First and Deputy First Minister. That is all well and good but if communities don’t dialogue in a meaningful way then we will not get the movement we require to lift Coleraine out of this situation.
Sinn Féin has long ago signalled its willingness to engage at all levels. The community needs to engage to find out that we are genuine about moving things forward and do not leave our politics at press release level.” ENDS
