Parker welcomes City Council's 2020 cycle strategy endorsement
Balmoral Sinn Féin representative Vincent Parker has welcomed last week’s endorsement of the Belfast Cycle City 2020 campaign by the City Council’s Development Committee.
Vincent Parker said,
"Previously I had met with representatives from Friends of the Earth to discuss the Belfast Cycle City 2020 campaign. This is a campaign which seeks to create positive change to cycling provision in the city of Belfast. It is an ambitious vision which would see Belfast City Council create a new 10 year cycle strategy in 2010, set a target of 10% of all journeys to be made by bicycle by 2020, and increase annual cycle spending (from the current £1) to £15 per person.
"I welcome the fact that the City Council’s Development Committee last week gave their endorsement to this strategy. The 2020 proposals will be of particular benefit for South Belfast where, at present, the Lisburn Road and Malone Road commuter corridors are heavily congested each day, with single occupant cars, and clogged with school runs. This is a positive plan which will help tackle these problems”
“In the wake of this endorsement I will again be meeting with Friends of the Earth to discuss how ensure that their strategy becomes a reality and that areas like South Belfast become more environmentally friendly, cleaner, and healthier place for all of its residents.”
