Delay in John Lewis development is a delay in jobs
Sinn Féin MLA for Lagan Valley Paul Butler has stated that the delay in the public inquiry into the proposed retail development at Sprucefield, which will be anchored by John Lewis, is a delay in job provision.
Speaking today Mr Butler said:
“The delay in the public inquiry into the John Lewis development at Sprucefield is a delay in job provision.
“We are currently in the midst of serious recession with many people both in the construction and retail sectors being unemployed.
“This development would bring significant employment benefits to West Belfast and in particular the Colin area, which suffers from high levels of unemployment. Over 2,000 job opportunities, both in construction and retail services would be made available through this development going ahead.
“However this current delay will do nothing to alleviate the jobs crisis. Many people who have been waiting on this development will be seeing once more another delay in jobs that they thought were on their way.
“We now need to see an rescheduled date for the public inquiry into the development being made available as soon as possible in order to push this project forward.”
