Referees' decisions can't be beyond question - Ferris

20 November, 2009 - by Martin Ferris TD

Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Sports Martin Ferris TD has questioned FIFA’s decision not to replay the Ireland France World Cup play-off match. Deputy Ferris said the French football authorities should signal their willingness to replay the match.

Speaking today Deputy Ferris said:

“FIFA says the referee's decision is final. If the referee was found to have taken a bribe from a gambling syndicate that influenced the result then surely FIFA would replay the match.

“I am not suggesting for one minute that the referee was bribed but simply pointing out that the referee’s decision may not always be final.

“FIFA should live up to their calls for fair play and insist that the match is replayed.

“Furthermore, the French football authorities should come out and signal their willingness to replay the match given the admission from their captain and the overwhelming video evidence that he handled the ball to set up the goal that robbed us of our chance to play in the world cup finals.

“If this were done by the French then FIFA may be forced to ensure that a replay takes place.” ENDS
