New boxing club launched in Sandyford

22 November, 2009

Sinn Féin Vice President Mary Lou McDonald attended the official opening of Angels Boxing Club in Sandyford on Friday evening. The club, run by Reggie Byrne and Carl Rowan was officially opened by Olympic Gold Medalist Michael Carruth.

Speaking at the event Mary Lou McDonald said the value of sports and particularly boxing clubs to local communities cannot be over emphasised. She said at a time when we are seeing more and more community facilities closing down as a result of Government cutbacks it is a breath of fresh air to see the opening of a new boxing club.

Ms. McDonald said, "Unfortunately what we are seeing throughout this city and beyond is sports clubs and community facilities like this one closing down in an environment of Government cutbacks. The value of sports and particularly boxing clubs to local communities cannot be over emphasised. They provide a safe environment for local people, young and old, boys and girls to come and learn the values of discipline, hard work, commitment and loyalty to your fellow fighters and your club.

"So I am delighted to be here tonight for the opening of Angels Boxing Club and I wish Reggie and Carl, the staff, members and all the boxers here all the best with the club. It is a breath of fresh air to see a new club bucking the trend of closures and actually opening its doors to a community." ENDS
