Hands off social welfare and low earners – Sinn Féin

9 December, 2009 - by Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD

Speaking ahead of the budget debate today Sinn Féin Dáil Leader Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin said his party will not support a budget that includes cuts to social welfare rates and the pay levels of low and middle income earners.

Deputy Ó Caoláin said the choice for the Government today is to target the wealthy or target the poor.

Deputy Ó Caoláin said:

“Sinn Féin Deputies will not support a budget today that includes cuts to social welfare payments and the pay levels of low and middle income earners.

“The choice for the Government today is whether to target the wealthy or target the poor.

“Sinn Féin’s position is very clear. We insist that those who can afford to pay more must be made to do so while the those on low and middle incomes and those dependent on social welfare must be protected.

“The budget must also include a jobs stimulus package to get people back to work.

“And we have set out in detail how the funds can be made available to the Government to do so.” ENDS
