Adams calls for St. Patrick's Day support

10 March, 2004

Sinn Féín President Gerry Adams MP has hit out at both Belfast City Council and the NI Events Company over their failure to fund this years St. Patrick's Carnival in the city. Mr Adams also appealed to people across the city to donate money to make up the substantial shortfall which currently exists to allow the carnival to proceed.

Mr Adams said:

"It is a disgrace that the St. Patrick's Day carnival in Belfast is denied funding by both the City Council and now also by the NI Events Company. The result of this is that the Carnival Committee have a deficit in funding on upwards of £20,000.

"It is not too late for NIEC to change their minds and the Carnival Committee are actively challenging their decision.

"I am appealing to people across this city and elsewhere who wish to see a celebration of the patron saint take place in Belfast next week to row in behind the extensive fundraising efforts which are currently ongoing to bridge the financial gap.

"I am sure that the people of this city will respond as they have done before and the people of Belfast will be joining millions of other people around the world in celebrating St. Patrick's Day." ENDS
