Assembly motion calls for mandatory landlord registration

18 January, 2010 - by Alex Maskey

South Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey will tomorrow, Tuesday, 19th January, propose a motion in the Assembly calling upon the Social Development Minister to introduce mandatory landlord registration.

Alex Maskey MLA said,
“Tomorrow’s motion is a continuation of our ongoing attempts to resolve the problems faced by those living in the Holylands area in South Belfast. These same problems are also reflected in other areas.

“This motion highlights one element of this problem and is timely because the Department of Social Development, last August, closed its consultation on a Strategy for the Private Rental Sector. The responses to that consultation would indicate that there is widespread support the mandatory registration of landlords.

“The Department of Social Development is now holding a consultation on its Housing Bill and I would hope that the desire, and need, for the mandatory registration of landlords is reflected in this Bill. The onus is on the Social Development Minister to introduce this badly needed piece of legislation.”

Note to editors: The motion which will be proposed in the Assembly tomorrow reads:
- Proposed: That this Assembly notes the efforts currently being made by the Minister for Employment and Learning to address the ongoing issues related to the Holyland area of South Belfast; and calls on the Minister for Social Development to introduce mandatory landlord registration, as landlord registration has been identified by stakeholders as a necessary step in addressing these issues.
