Call for Ravenhill extension of Phoenix Gas supply

18 January, 2010

East Belfast Sinn Féin representative Niall Ó Donnghaile has called upon Phoenix Gas to extend its service to the Ravenhill Reach, Ardenlee and Bakers Court areas. Mr Ó Donnghaile has written to Phoneix Gas to make the request and was acting after being contacted by residents in the area.

Niall Ó Donnghaile said,
“Both myself and my Party colleague Alex Maskey MLA have been contacted by a number of residents in this area who have informed us that their properties are still being serviced by Economy 7 since the developments were built.

“NIE no longer consider Economy 7 as appropriate for residential properties and residents in the area have spoke of rising cost and poor quality. Further to this, as the development is on the River Lagan, it is important that the façade is not marred by oil tanks and oil heating is, therefore, more or less impossible without environmental impact.

“I am further aware that some representation has been made to Phoenix Gas in order to request an extension of gas pipes, which I understand are as close as nearby Ballarat Street, into the area; unfortunately, residents received a negative response to this request.

“I would be concerned that residents in this area are at a distinct as they do not have a full choice of heating systems which consequently subjects them to unavoidable and unnecessary costs which, particularly in the current climate, is unsatisfactory.”

He concluded,
“Sinn Féin has written to Phoenix Gas in order to ascertain if there are current plans to install Phoenix Gas in to this development. If no such plans exist I would request that Phoenix Gas explore the potential for providing this service to residents in this area.”
